Jupiter

Jupiter is the God of thunder and the sky. He also serves the King of the Gods watching over all of the Roman Gods. He is the son of Saturn, who he overthrow to gain control of heavens from the Titans. The Roman worshiped him more than any other culture that came before adding to their sense of supremacy. The planet Jupiter is the largest and most powerful within our solar system so it was fitting that the Greeks would first name the planet after their most powerful god Zeus and the Romans followed suit. This is a good decision because Jupiter is such and large and powerful planet and holds many moons in its orbit just like Jupiter does with the rest of the gods. Jupiter is also one of the most famous and favorited planets by people just like Jupiter is to fans of ancient mythology. There no betting name for a planet of such magnitude and power.

Uranus

Uranus is an older god in Greek mythology and is associated with the Roman god Caelus. He was the son and husband of Gaia. He is the god of the sky or heavens. Uranus is an appropriate name for a planet because he was the god of the sky and the heavens meaning that he had a very important role. He was one of the planets but people believed that he would protect them. The name is important relating their protection because they had believed that the sky was a brass dome stunned with stars. This is a good name for the planet because they believed he was the sky and the heavens. Uranus is the second farthest sun from the earth taking it a very long time to go around the earth. This resembles how Uranus is an older god because it takes 84 years to go around the sun once. It is also one of the brightest planets in our solar system even with it being so far away. It is almost visible to the naked why and this fits his name because people see it as one of the stars that are brighter than the rest. Being the color blue it resembles the sky and it being farther away shows how it is a place to where people will want to go otherwise called heaven.

Aqua Man

Aquaman is a fictional character in the DC comics. He is the king of the Atlantis in his origin story as well as in the 2018 adaption. Aquaman is related to Greek mythology because he is mainly based off of Posiden. They incorporated Posiden into the character because Aquaman can have sort of the same powers. Aquaman is able to control the oceans and the oceanic life around him because he has a connection with it, similar to Posiden. But, one big thing that brings them close together is the trident. This is something that Posiden has always used and is something that Aquaman has started to use. In Aquaman, the trident is actually the trident of Posiden. I think that making a character like Aquaman similar to the greek god Posiden makes sense. They both have powers surrounding the sea and both have the same weapon. Making Aquaman have a similar story to Posiden also ensures that if the viewers know at least a little bit of greek mythology, it might be easier to grasp what kind of character Aquaman is.

Achilles Tendon

The Greek historical figure, Achilles was a warrior/hero in the Trojan War. Achilles was well known for killing the Trojan king Hector during the Trojan War and his name appears in Homer's Iliad. However, during the war, Achilles was slain because of being shot in the heel with an arrow from an enemy soldier. This is why the tendon connecting the foot to the leg is referred to as the Achilles Tendon. This is a fitting name for the tendon because it seems to always be hurting (at least for me) and it led to Achilles' downfall in battle. Kevin Durant, a star basketball player, is injured for the whole season due to hurting his Achilles tendon. Durant is like an Achilles to other NBA franchises, so like in the Trojan war, a formidable warrior cannot aid his team due to damaging this seemingly harmless tendon.

Mercury (Planet)

Mercury is the god of merchants, travelers, transporters, and thieves and tricksters. He is the son of Jupiter and is most commonly known as the “Messenger of the gods”. He is the son of the god Zeus and the Nymph Maia. Some of his most common symbols are the caduceus, winged sandals, a purse to represent him being the god of merchants. The planet in our Solar system, Mercury, has its name due to its quick rotation around the sun. Out of every planet, it has the lowest time of rotation at 88 days. The quickness of the rotation closely resembles the quickness of the Roman god Mercury and his job as the messenger of the gods.

I think that the name of the planet matches its namesake very well. As the smallest but fastest planet in the solar system, it resembles the traits of the god Mercury. The small size represents his standing in the council of the gods. While he is one of the more important gods, he is only thought of as the messenger rather than one of the more important deities. The quick rotation of the planet matches the occupation of the god as well. Hermes was assigned the task of delivering the messages of all of the gods. Whether it was delivering a gift to mortals or sending a mission to a hero, he did it all. I believe that since all of the planets are named after Mythological characters/creatures, the name Mercury fits the smallest but fastest planet very well.

Titanium

Titanium is element 22 on the periodic table. It is 60% less dense than steel and has a melting point higher than steel. It has a high level of corrosion resistance, it is nonmagnetic, and it transfers heat well. Originally named gregorite, German chemist M.H. Klaproth renamed it Titanium when he rediscovered it in 1793. He named it Titanium after the Titans of Greek mythology because it is the incarnation of natural strength. Used mostly as an alloying agent, Alloys of titanium are mainly used in aerospace, aircraft, and engines where strong, lightweight, temperature-resistant materials are needed.

Orion

Orion, the constellation, is often known as just "the archer". While I never really put much thought about it, the story behind it is actually pretty interesting, albeit strange to say the least. Son of Poseidon, Orion had the ability to walk on water. He used this ability to reach the island of Crete, where he proceeded to make sexual advances towards a named Merope, daughter of the king. The King, Oenopion, blinded Orion and forced him away from the island. Later, after having his vision restored by Helios, Orion decided to join Artemis and Leto on their hunts. He was so passionate that he claimed he could kill every animal on the Earth. Gaea, who was having none of this, sent a scorpion to kill Orion. In their sadness, Artemis and Leto begged Zeus, king of the Gods, to put their friend in the sky. Zeus granted their wish, but also added the scorpion. I think the name fits the myth perfectly, because it's exactly what Leto and Artemis wanted. They wanted their friend to live on, and how can anyone be remembered without their name. The constellation itself also fits perfectly, as even the bow was included. The myth is all over the place, but the constellation itself works.

Chimera Disorder

Chimera disorder is the condition where individual organisms are formed from two or more zygotes, giving them features that are derived from both genes. This could range from having blood cells of different blood types to, if the zygotes were of different genders, the possession of both gender's genitalia. The term "chimera" is from the Mediterranean mythology of a chimera, which was a mythological beast which possessed the heads of a lion and a goat, as well as a tail that was a snake's body and head. This beast is mentioned in the by Homer in the Iliad as "a thing of immortal make, not human, lion-fronted and snake behind, a goat in the middle". Throughout time, the term chimera has been adapted to be attributed to any creature that is a mixture of 2 or more different animals. Take Fullmetal Alchemist, for  example. Chimeras are a common occurrence in this show, and they have been seen to be mixtures of dogs, cats, birds, lions, and even humans at later points in the series. Chimera Disorder has been called "Chimera" because it is a mixture of two or more zygotes, creating a mixture of phenotypes that can be seen as a real life chimera.

Trojan Hourse

October blog

The trojan horse is the decoy that the Greeks used to be able to enter the city of Troy. about a 10-year war the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse and were able to hide a force of men inside of it to be able to attack later. The Greeks left the horse at the gates of Troy and sailed away. After the Trojans brought the horse through their gates and the Greeks sailed away, the men inside the house came out and conquered Troy, winning the war. Anything with the name “Trojan Horse” has now become known as something that is to trick or fool the target. Computer malware is called “Trojan Horse” or “Trojan” because it tricks the user into allowing it to run programs on the person's computer. This name is accurate because it does exactly what the Greeks did within Troy. I think that thi8s virus has the perfect name because it is misleading and that is exactly how the Greeks were able to win the war, by misleading the Trojans to allow them in. The computer malware and the Greeks were discussed and by the time the owner of the computer knows what is up, it is too late
and the malware is already on the computer.

Princess Diana of Themyscira, or commonly known as Wonder Woman, is a fictional
superheroine from the DC Justice League Comics. Appearing in 1941 on an All-Stars
comic, Diana has the powers of superhuman strength, nigh-invulnerability, speed,
flight, healing factor, and semi-immortality, as well as using her well-known
bulletproof bracelets and golden lasso. Diana's origin story states that she was
sculpted from clay by her mother Queen Hippolyta and was given life as an
Amazonian woman. Hippolyta was mentioned in Greek mythology as the queen of the
Amazon women and the daughter of Ares, the god of war. Diana is the goddess of the
hunt, moon, and nature in Roman mythology, Artemis in Greek mythology, which may
be tied to the idea behind Wonder Woman's real name. I believe this story puts a fun
twist on Greek mythology while still being original. It gives a sense of feminism that
wasn't seen much in the 1940s. I am glad the writers thought of this fun way to represent
goddesses in Greek mythology to influence kids. I believe that Wonder Woman is a
powerful character from a family of Greek gods that should be recognized more often.

The Titanic

The ship, RMS Titanic, got its name from the Titans in Greek mythology.  The Titans were godlike beings spawned from Gaea and Ouranos and ruled the earth before the gods.  They were overthrown by their children the gods in a lengthy war.  The Titanic was also a part of a series of ships called the Olympic class ocean liners.  Mount Olympus is the biggest mountain in Greece and was the home of the gods.  The ship was first discussed in a meeting between executives of the White Star Line in 1907.  The name Titanic was quite fitting given the enormous size of the ships and that the Titans were the size of gods.  What is interesting though is what happened to the Titanic on its maiden voyage.  The Titanic was sunk by an ice berg, which draws similarities to the actual Titans being killed by the gods.  Even though the designers obviously didn't think about this reason for the name, it still fits none the less.

Adventure Time Nathan

There are many similarities to mythology in adventure time and in this post I am going to compare adventure time to the story of Persephone and Hades. Hades captured Persephone until she loved him and The ice king in adventure time would capture princesses so that he could marry one and specifically liked Princess Bubblegum. They both use the idea of Stockholm syndrome. This is proven in the third episode of adventure time when the ice king captures 6 princesses in hopes that he could marry one. This is only one of the mythology references in the show and the show is known for being filled with them.

Honda Odyssey

Despite being one of the coolest cars to hit the road today (said no one ever) and its ability to seat 8 comfortably, the Honda Odyssey has a lot of mythology reference to the Odyssey. Homer's Odyssey, a story about the Greek hero, Odysseus who has not returned to his kingdom in Ithaca after 10 years. Odysseus is mostly known for his bravery, brilliance, and versatility. Odysseus is a strong character, physically and mentally, he has the strength to overtake the Trojans while not returning home or seeing his family in 10 years. Odysseus is definitely a man with family in mind; when Odysseus finally makes it home, he disguises himself only for his nurse and dog to recognize him. Once his son, Telemachus sees Odysseus' true identity, he and Telemachus fight suitors in pursuit of marrying his wife, Penelope. Odysseus tries to reveal himself to Penelope in which she tests him only to see it was really Odysseus.
Due to Honda being Japanese and the Odyssey being a long-ran model, it makes it hard to find out why the Odyssey was named the Odyssey but I believed it was the perfect name for the minivan. The Honda Odyssey is a minivan in which minivans are built with one word in mind, "family." Odyssey represents Odysseus who was a man that took family pretty seriously and Odysseus is known for its brilliance and versatility in which minivans are brilliant with their sliding doors and versible for fitting the entire soccer team while having room for the cooler and lawn chairs for the local rec soccer game (no offense soccer moms).

Ajax Emma

Ajax Cleaner, but make it Latin:
Ajax, otherwise known as Ajax the Greater, is described in the Iliad as being of great stature and colossal frame, He is compared to the Greek hero Achilles by being secondary in strength and bravery. The slogan for the original Ajax scrubbing powder was "Stronger than dirt!" Some Ajax dish soaps use the slogan "Stronger than grease!"

The name Ajax for the product and their comparison to the greek hero does correlate to power. So in that sense, I think the name fits. However, Ajax the hero has nothing to do with cleaning. This name, to Latin scholars and mythology enthusiasts, works perfectly well in portraying the intended message. But to the majority of others, it is overlooked and just sounds striking. I guess the name Achilles came with a weak point.

Harry Potter and Its Connection to Mythology

One very distinct case of Mythology inserting itself into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the character of Minerva McGonagall, a teacher throughout the series. Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom as well as strategic warfare, is a very popular Roman goddess, due to her extremely admirable qualities. Her constant outsmarting of all who stand before her is present in just about every myth in which she takes part. She was birthed by Metis, whom Jupiter had swallowed, and thus she popped out of Jupiter's head. Minerva McGonagall shares her name with the Goddess of wisdom because of her cunning intellect displayed throughout the series as well as her capability in battle, similar to her namesake. Her being bestowed this name informs the reader of the personality and what to expect from this character, and thus enhances the story being read; the reader, now knowing what to expect of them, and having an understanding of who the are as a person, doesn't need go through pages of character development for a side character in this massive narrative.

The Constellation Andromeda

Andromeda

Andromeda was a beautiful princess who had a beautiful mother too confident in her own beauty. This angered the goddess Juno so she sent a monster to ravage the princesses' country. The king, her father, went to the oracle to ask for help against the monster and the oracle answered his request with sacrificing Andromeda to the monster as an offering. In the end, the king chained Andromeda to a rock as a sacrifice but Perseus, passing by after killing Medusa, fell in love and saved Andromeda.

The constellation is of Andromeda with her hands chained up on a rock.

This story really resonated with me, and in a lot of ways the story is dark and sad. Andromeda was not the issue here but she became the victim do to her being a woman and her being the daughter of the women who had angered Juno. At first, I didn't understand why it wasn't the mother who was chained to the rock but now I realize that when the myth was created, men had this biaest against women and created a story in which they were doing wrong (don't be overcome with vanity). So in my opinion, this story was a lesson to young girls to not think of themselves too highly, and if they do, they will inevitably be punished by the gods.

Tulane motto

Originally established in 1834, the motto of Tulane is a reminder of how the pupil should behave and be selfless. It also says students shouldn't do anything because they want to, but because it's in their greatest interest. Motto: Non sibi, sed suis, meaning "Not for yourself, but for your own." I believe this fits well with what this school represents. Things such as bettering yourself through education and how they also use the images on their crest. The pelican on the top represents selflessness from that old story of the pelican mother bringing her child back to life by covering it with her own blood.

Panem et circenses

Source: Wikipedia

“Panem et circenses” is translated as “bread and circuses”, and it is used to signify some sort of diplomatic agreement. This is because bread (food) and circuses (entertainment) go very well together, so the diplomats go together like food and entertainment. This could be used to signify a “yes” when faced with a diplomatic decision. We should definitely not use this because I don’t ever want to use “circus” whenever there's a good thing, because that is the antithesis of a circus.
