The other day I was assigned Edgar Allan Poe to read for English 1. In the Short Story (Spoiler Alert) the main character kills his another man and, at the end, exclaims "
In Pace requiescat!."This phrase translates to "May he rest in peace."I found it interesting that Edgar Allan Poe knew some Latin and then it dawned on me. A persons writing capability is exponentially increased with a basic comprehension of latin and it can be a great advantage to know the roots of the English language.
Love this and Poe! Many of the great authors of the 18th and 19th centuries were well versed in Latin and ancient Greek as it was considered standard course work and the mark of an educated person!
