Mississippi Motto

Mississippi
Virtute et armis
  • By valor and arms
The committee that designed a Coat of Arms was assigned by legislative action on February 7, 1894. On that shield, the Mississippi motto is printed in gold letters on a white background stating, “Virtute et armis.” Selected by James Rhea Preston, the inspiration came from another motto by Lord Gray De WiltonVirtute Non Armis Fido, which means, “I trust in virtue not arms.” Mississippi’s motto is not an official state motto, but it has been accepted as an element of the Mississippi Code in Title 3, Chapter 3. Title 3 states the state sovereignty, jurisdiction, and holidays and Chapter 3 is about State Boundaries, Holidays, and State Emblems.
This motto, Virtute et armis, is significant to the state of Mississippi; this means “by valor and arms.” In the motto, the word “valor” is meant to be interpreted as courage and “arms” for strength. I think this is an appropriate motto for a state because it gives the idea that the state is strong and courageous and is able to support the needs of the people living there. A state needs to be strong because without strength in numbers, businesses, etc., a person would not be willing to move there. A state needs to be courageous because that lets a person know they have the opportunity to thrive in the face of something that isn’t considered ideal.

justitia omnibus

The Latin motto for The District of Columbia is Justitia Omnibus which translates to "Justice for all." the motto was first implemented on the seal in 1871 with a figure that is to resemble George Washington and a women figure that is holding the constitution. At the bottom of the seal, it says the motto Justitia Omnibus. the motto is a good representation for the district because located in DC is the Supreme Court and all of the justices. It is also where a lot of the country's justice is put to trial, looking to see if people are found guilty or not. It is the center for justice in our nation so it is right for the district to have the motto.

Pandora

Before Spotify and Apple Music became big, Pandora music was the "go-to" music streaming service. Pandora was the first mortal woman to be involved in Greek mythology. She was formed out of clay created by Zeus. Pandora was described as a sweet, lovely, maiden-shape, like to the immortal goddesses in face” by Hephaestus. One of Pandora's major accomplishments was her opening the jar which saved the human race. Pandora is the meaning of "all gifts" in Greek, which I think is relevant to the Pandora music streaming service. I think they named it Pandora because you could listen to all types of music on Pandora basically resembling "all gifts." After doing some research, I also found that they also used her name as a marketing scheme, they knew that people would know the name, Pandora-making Pandora music very popular due to the name recognition.

Theseus Anti-Virus

The Theseus Anti-Virus was named after the greek hero Theseus. Theseus was the founding hero for the Athenians and was regarded as a great reformer. Theseus was responsible for a political unification in Athens called synoikismos, meaning dwelling together. He also had a massive palace which was on top of the Acropolis. The Theseus Anti-Virus was created to help to remove malware from computers and free storage as well as protect the device as a whole. The name Theseus came from how Theseus reformed and saved Athens, the anti-virus would save the computer from the malware and reform it to a better state. I believe that this is a very good name for the anti-virus because it essentially preforming the same action of reforming into a better product on the computer that hero Theseus preformed on Athens. I also believe that when you install the anti-virus, your computer is safer just as Athens was safer with Theseus. Another way that this is a perfect name is because of how both the anti virus and the hero needed to constantly be preparing and looking for new and better threats.

Jupiter

Jupiter is the God of thunder and the sky. He also serves the King of the Gods watching over all of the Roman Gods. He is the son of Saturn, who he overthrow to gain control of heavens from the Titans. The Roman worshiped him more than any other culture that came before adding to their sense of supremacy. The planet Jupiter is the largest and most powerful within our solar system so it was fitting that the Greeks would first name the planet after their most powerful god Zeus and the Romans followed suit. This is a good decision because Jupiter is such and large and powerful planet and holds many moons in its orbit just like Jupiter does with the rest of the gods. Jupiter is also one of the most famous and favorited planets by people just like Jupiter is to fans of ancient mythology. There no betting name for a planet of such magnitude and power.

Uranus

Uranus is an older god in Greek mythology and is associated with the Roman god Caelus. He was the son and husband of Gaia. He is the god of the sky or heavens. Uranus is an appropriate name for a planet because he was the god of the sky and the heavens meaning that he had a very important role. He was one of the planets but people believed that he would protect them. The name is important relating their protection because they had believed that the sky was a brass dome stunned with stars. This is a good name for the planet because they believed he was the sky and the heavens. Uranus is the second farthest sun from the earth taking it a very long time to go around the earth. This resembles how Uranus is an older god because it takes 84 years to go around the sun once. It is also one of the brightest planets in our solar system even with it being so far away. It is almost visible to the naked why and this fits his name because people see it as one of the stars that are brighter than the rest. Being the color blue it resembles the sky and it being farther away shows how it is a place to where people will want to go otherwise called heaven.

Aqua Man

Aquaman is a fictional character in the DC comics. He is the king of the Atlantis in his origin story as well as in the 2018 adaption. Aquaman is related to Greek mythology because he is mainly based off of Posiden. They incorporated Posiden into the character because Aquaman can have sort of the same powers. Aquaman is able to control the oceans and the oceanic life around him because he has a connection with it, similar to Posiden. But, one big thing that brings them close together is the trident. This is something that Posiden has always used and is something that Aquaman has started to use. In Aquaman, the trident is actually the trident of Posiden. I think that making a character like Aquaman similar to the greek god Posiden makes sense. They both have powers surrounding the sea and both have the same weapon. Making Aquaman have a similar story to Posiden also ensures that if the viewers know at least a little bit of greek mythology, it might be easier to grasp what kind of character Aquaman is.

Achilles Tendon

The Greek historical figure, Achilles was a warrior/hero in the Trojan War. Achilles was well known for killing the Trojan king Hector during the Trojan War and his name appears in Homer's Iliad. However, during the war, Achilles was slain because of being shot in the heel with an arrow from an enemy soldier. This is why the tendon connecting the foot to the leg is referred to as the Achilles Tendon. This is a fitting name for the tendon because it seems to always be hurting (at least for me) and it led to Achilles' downfall in battle. Kevin Durant, a star basketball player, is injured for the whole season due to hurting his Achilles tendon. Durant is like an Achilles to other NBA franchises, so like in the Trojan war, a formidable warrior cannot aid his team due to damaging this seemingly harmless tendon.
